The concept

The IAV5GOS project aims to conduct a pilot test of a monitoring and assistance system for operators of heavy machinery or industrial vehicles. Through the transmission of images to a cloud processing infrastructure via a configurable private 5G communication network based on open-source technology, artificial intelligence algorithms will be applied to detect, in real-time, driving and operational risk situations. This will enable the sending of notifications through the 5G network itself.

What is the objective of this project?

Secmotic’s main objective within the project is to investigate the application of open RAN technologies for designing private 5G networks that facilitate the deployment of such infrastructures, minimizing dependence on telecommunications operators who commercialize and operate public communication networks. The goal is to bring this technology to the private sector, providing the ability to deploy, operate, and maintain their own 5G communication networks and easily adapt them to the specific needs of their production environment.

How does it work?

Firstly, in a laboratory environment, the deployment of a fully functional private 5G network is carried out. All the key components of its architecture are based on open-source open RAN software and general-purpose hardware. Subsequently, optimization work is performed on the components of this architecture to enhance scalability and increase the parametrization capabilities of the 5G network. The goal is to achieve a design that provides a high degree of flexibility for implementation in different scenarios.

Finally, an iterative adjustment of the private 5G network is conducted to enhance its enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (uRLLC) capabilities. These capabilities are crucial to supporting high-resolution video streaming services and running real-time artificial intelligence algorithms that can detect signs of fatigue or distractions among operators of heavy and industrial vehicles.

What problems does this solution solve?

The main advantages provided by the project are:

    • Democratizing access to 5G technology through an open-source technology-based network approach.
    • Reducing vendor lock-in for traditional manufacturers and providers of cellular network equipment and software.
    • Enabling greater openness in the cellular communications market, allowing new players to enter and provide 5G infrastructure and services in the private sector.
    • Improving safety in industrial environments with heavy vehicle traffic through real-time fatigue detection systems.
    • Increasing productivity by minimizing downtime due to oversights or accidents involving heavy machinery and industrial vehicles.
