ICOS | Revolutionising Occupational Safety with the SafeWorkNet (SWN) Project

The SafeWorkNet (SWN) project, powered by the European Union’s ICOS initiative, is redefining the future of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) through an integrated, intelligent monitoring system. Developed by Secmotic in collaboration with INERCO, this cutting-edge solution brings together IoT, Edge Computing, AI, and 5G technology to proactively protect workers in industrial settings.

 The concept

SafeWorkNet aims to create a dynamic and adaptive OH&S monitoring system by deploying a mesh network of smart nodes equipped with computer vision capabilities and orchestrated by ICOS – an innovative IoT2Cloud operating system.

These intelligent nodes operate autonomously, enabling real-time detection and alerting of occupational risks, including:

  • Absence of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as helmets, vests, gloves, and welding masks

  • Unsafe proximity to moving equipment like forklifts

  • Hazardous behaviors or ergonomic risks

By leveraging private 4G/5G networks, the system ensures low-latency data transmission, empowering instant response even in environments with limited cloud connectivity. Real-world testing at INERCO’s facilities has already demonstrated the system’s ability to operate without internet access, making it highly robust and adaptable.

Benefits of this project

The system offers multiple benefits related to wrokplace safety:

1. Real-time worker protection

SWN enhances workplace safety through instant detection of hazardous conditions, significantly reducing the likelihood of accidents and injuries.

2. Intelligent and autonomous monitoring

Thanks to Edge AI and deep learning models, the system can process video locally, enabling instant alerts without relying on cloud infrastructure. This reduces bandwidth needs and ensures continuity during network outages.

3. Easy deployment and scalability

The portable nodes are quick to deploy and adaptable to both indoor and outdoor industrial environments, enabling rapid prototyping and iterative improvement.

4. Operational efficiency

By reducing downtime due to incidents and automating safety monitoring, SWN supports higher productivity and economic efficiency.

5. Building a culture of prevention

With proactive risk detection and constant monitoring, SWN encourages the use of PPE and adherence to safety protocols, helping to establish a strong safety culture.

Powered by innovation and colaboration

The success of SWN lies in the synergy between Secmotic and INERCO. While Secmotic provides expertise in IoT, vision-based AI, and edge computing, INERCO brings decades of practical experience in the OH&S field, offering the perfect testbed for validating solutions in real industrial environments.

SWN follows an agile and iterative development process, with clear milestones including:

  • ICOS platform integration

  • Machine learning model development

  • Edge node deployment and field testing

  • Final demonstration in operational settings

A real-world use case for the ICOS Project

The SWN initiative is one of the real-world use cases that showcase the potential of ICOS: a revolutionary meta-operating system aimed at optimising distributed computing resources across cloud and edge environments. ICOS promotes interoperability, efficiency, and security in open ecosystems, while driving innovation through hands-on experimentation and collaboration.

Secmotic’s contribution demonstrates how this vision can be applied to real-life industrial challenges, proving that smart, distributed, and AI-powered systems can significantly enhance workplace safety.
